Patrick read avidly, and loved history. He became an authority on Guadalcanal through a high school project. He knew the challenges and the hazards of military service. He aspired to receive a commission in the Marine Corps, though ultimately chose to be commissioned in the Navy to pursue carrier aviation. When I asked him why he wanted to serve, he told me, "It needs to be done, Dad, it's my generation's turn." The movie "America" in 2014 ends with a "rock guitar" version of the National Anthem. I usually cringe when the National Anthem is altered, but this is an exception.  The accompanying video is excellent.  I believe Patrick would salute it.

Navy Hymn sung extemporaneously by members of the USNA Glee Club (Sam Amyett, Ben Anderson, Ben Barsam, Zach Ferraguti, Halston Hoover, Paul Jackson, Michael Mason, Graeme Nelson, Dylan Pennell, Matt Sensenig, and Clay Verkouwin) in a tunnel at Battery Townsley on a rainy day in March, 2016. On religion:  

Patrick's next door neighbor in Mississippi was my age, a triathlete, a private pilot, and a car guy.  Patrick visited him often. When we retrieved Patrick's car, his neighbor met us, cranked up his compressor, and checked our tires.  He called Patrick "the son he never had."  Once on the road, we turned on Patrick's radio. We heard "He Reigns," contemporary Christian music on WMSO!  It moved me to tears.
